High end telephoto lenses are also quite heavy, so a metal hood does not add much to the total weight of the system. Despite this, some of the high end telephoto primes have fiberglass hoods to reduce weight. I store my EX with it's petal shaped lens hood, the one built into the body casing, supporting the weight of the lens, about half the time. Ivory tower? No one disputes the simple geometry that for an equal quantity of material, a petal-shaped lens hood provides more efficient shading to the front lens element; Has absolutely nothing to do with equal quantity of material.
You can either have a short circular one, or a much longer petal shape one. Though a lot of photographers settle for a UV filter or even a lens cap to protect the external lens, lens hoods provide an external layer of protection against accidental impacts, scratches, fingerprints, rain, snow, dust and other debris. It adds contrast When lens flares and strong glares hit your lens, they tend to block your view.
Glares and flares wash out your image and produce discolorations, thus reducing contrast and picture quality. With a lens hood, stray light doesn't enter the lens and ensures that you get a clear view of a scene. The difference between a photo that has been taken with a lens hood and those without can be seen, which you can test yourself.

Here's an image that may help people to visualise why many lens hoods are petal-shaped. This is a great image. Did you create it or find it somewhere? I created it. I'd started learning 3ds Max at the time, so was looking for things to practise on, and thought it would help people to visualise why the petals make sense.
I must have used Reid's answer as a script to follow to create my image. Reid Reid The optimal design for all lenses is petal shaped, but I suppose for longer lenses it would be quite a petal. Reid Preidhorsky As you say, because of the narrower FoV for telephoto lenses, the hood would have to be seriously long before it became necessary to petal-shape it in order to avoid vignetting.
For some fisheyes expected to produce a circular image, I would assume that a round shape is optimal. But in most cases we are using a circular lens to take rectangular pictures on a rectangular sensor or film.
