Wordsworth does not clarify what he means by language. Language is a matter of words, syntax, style etc. Wordsworth says that the language should be purified. So if it is purified, it will be that of ever class people, not only of the common class. According to Wordsworth, there is no essential difference between the language of the prose and the metrical composition. Besides, he also permits to use metre. If metre is used, the order of words or the arrangement of words will be different also.
Eliot attacks Wordsworth's definition of poetry. Eliot says that not emotion but concentration is essential for poetic composition. To conclude, we can say that somewhat erroneous is in "Preface to the Lyrical Ballads" by William Wordsworth. But as a first attempt to strike the artificiality of the long nourished Poetic Diction of the Neo-classical poetry, it is an epoch-making contribution to English literature.
Wordsworth wants to reach poetry even the solitary reapers. In this respect, he opens a new era. He creates a new school of poets.

Wordsworth proceeds to define a permanent poetic voice that should not reflect those of wealth and importance. Coleridge disagrees with this completely. He believes that common language does not apply to all classes; and therefore, should not be practiced.
The Role of Poetry and the Poet. The ordinary man, Wordsworth believes, is closer to nature; and therefore closer to human-nature. Coleridge thinks the role of the poet should maintain some of the previous ideals of poetry regarding language rather than completely change to a language of lowly men.
The role of poetry is where both writers seem to agree. Wordsworth and Coleridge believe the purpose of poetry is to stir passion in the reader.
