What is the difference between a discbine and a haybine

Typically, a drum mower is used for hay cutting, not finish or brush mowing. The standard drum mower has two counter-rotating drums that are powered from a gearbox above. Each drum is essentially a cylinder of inches in diameter and length of inches, with a large disc attached to the bottom. A combine is designed to harvest dry stalks that have seeds at the top. For hay you are cutting green stalks, which is very different. On a smooth, level field they may work, but I'd borrow or test run a dealers before sinking any money into one.

I have dads New Holland he bought new in Still works good, never been in a shed its whole life. It will do me till I'm gone. If you are going to get a haybine I recommend a center pivot, seen many NH s and some Hesston s going for around the dollar mark and in great shape. Wanna drive to Michigan? I was just talking to my cousin at the funeral home tonight.

He's got a New Holland that he wants to sell. He bought it new. Always shedded. He said the paints faded, but it works good. Said he might as well sell that, his square baler and his round baler. Said he didn't know if there was enough demand for things like that anymore to make it worth his while to try to sell them or if he might as well take them to the scrap yard and be done with it.

Shoot me an email of you want to haul one that far and I'll give you his number. The is a 9ft machine, I've got the identical mower comditioner, except 7ft - the Worse case, you can price out parts online without hassling the dealer. Good luck, Bill Hesston at Work. They are a lot smaller then a haybine or discbine for storage purposes and you can keep using your drum mower. Also a good bit cheaper Just a thought. I have a New Holland 9' sickle, we do about 55 acres of hay, usually 2 cuttings a year.

I could not justify the cost and maintenance of a Disc mower for our use. I would like to be able to cut as fast as I see disc mowers run, but, a good sickle mower is fine for small acreage. In my opinion. If you look long and hard you can find decent discbines. Bought this 8 foot Deere for 2k. Gotta be in the right place at the right time. Bought a 9 foot discbine a few years ago for cheap. Have run it for several years without much trouble.

I see. Back to haybine vs. I've used NH and Hesston haybines over the years. I currently have a Hesston; because the price was right. The comments above about parts, though, ring true to me. For the NH, even though it was an old ; it seemed as though the dealer near me had just about any part that I needed right there.

The Hesston is harder to get parts for. There are some things I like about Hesston haybines: For instance, I like the sickle drive mechanism better. There are some things I like about the NH haybines: For instance, the reel drive mechanism. Hesston uses a chain; which seems to require more maintenance. With both, though, the main difference in quality and speed of cut is adjustment, not brand.

Personally I could never go back to a haybine after having a discbine. Especially in the humid Midwest where you are often trying to cut with wet dew in the morning.

If you think you have enough hp to pull a 16' hydr-swing haybine you could pull a 9' cut discbine. A 9' discbine can cut your acres in one day. Baldwin City, KS. Rollers VS impeller might be a debate, but disc VS sickle is a no brainer.

Even now, run 11' machine over few hundred acres each summer. You'd never do that with a sickle machine. We do have a fair chunk of prairie where a sickle might do a better job, but not enough for me to even bat an eye at the thought of going back. I had a 12 foot sickle machine and went to a 9 foot discbine and increase what I do in a day 3x. Same tractor on both machines.

Red Paint. I'd stop baling hay if we had to go back. You hit the nail on the head. I have one of each. My alfalfa is all on pieces of ground not fit for corn. As such they are small and irregular shaped. Yes my disc will cut faster but not significantly faster than a late model sickle machine set up correctly right gaurds, right sections, right tilt, and right reel speed.

Sickle machines improved a lot in the 90s about the time their popularity was declining.
